Student Council’s Hurricane Harvey relief efforts continue

Group to take book donations, sponsor grade-level competition to raise money for storm's victims

Starting Monday, Student Council is hosting a book drive and a competition between all grade levels to benefit those affected by Hurricane Harvey. The class that raises the most money during lunches next week will receive cookies from StuCo.

The idea to donate to Hurricane Harvey victims originated with an e-mail from the American Red Cross that Principal Lesli Guajardo sent to StuCo adviser Sherry Dieterich. In response, StuCo decided to start raising money and accepting item donations that could then be sent to the Red Cross.

“There were so many people that lost their lives, as well as their homes and items,” Dieterich said. “Some schools have been lost. So we need to collect to help others.”

At least 70 people have been confirmed dead in the wake of Harvey, according to news reports, and many South Texas schools remain closed due to damages.

Any students who are interested in helping with StuCo’s relief efforts should talk to Dieterich in room A211 or email [email protected]
