At this year’s annual Star Wars Convention, the trailer and title for the upcoming film were finally released. After an extreme amount of waiting, fans were finally able to see the trailer for one of the year’s most anticipated films. “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” looks to be one of this year’s best.

J.J. Abrams will direct, being the only person to direct more than one film of the franchise, and fans are glad he’s back. “The Last Jedi” was one of the most disputed films of the franchise, but it looks like Abrams will be bringing the fun that so many loved in Episode VI.

The start of the trailer parallels that of “The Force Awakens” trailer, but it’s Rey’s breathing we hear, not Finn’s. But before we see her perform one of the most badass backflips ever, we hear a familiar voice talking about what’s next to come. It’s clear she’s nervous but ready to fight. I can’t be sure, but I believe that Kylo is flying the ship she flips over.

Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren looks to be back in full force and ready to take down the rebels. In the trailer we see him taking down his opponent like it’s his job — which it kind of is, but still. We also see him putting his mask back together. It seems like Abrams is saying he had to clean up Rian Johnson’s “Last Jedi” mess, but we won’t get into that now.

There are so many nods to the other films; where do I even start? Leia holding one of the medals Luke and Han received in Episode IV. Lando Calrissian back in the Millenium Falcon with Chewie. Rey, Finn, and Poe standing above the original Death Star. And Abrams’ use of text was a direct nod to the Episode I trailer back in 1999. Look it up.

But, perhaps, the biggest surprise of them all was the eerie laugh heard after Luke’s line, “No one’s ever really gone.” Most were expecting to see some force ghosts of previous Jedi or even someone from the past films. But no one was prepared for that.

Of course, this is only a teaser, so when the full official trailer is released, fans will be able to make more solid theories. For now, we’ll have to live with our unanswered questions.

“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” comes out December 20.
