McKenna Beard, a BHS junior, won first place at the Rotary Interact Four-Way Test Speech contest held at Denton City Hall on Feb. 9.

Beard competed against nine other students from Denton High, Ryan High and Braswell.

“The most difficult thing was giving a speech where others could still see my viewpoint even if they didn’t agree with it,” Beard said.

Beard’s speech centered on whether San Francisco 49er’s football player Colin Kaepernick made the right decision in choosing to take a knee during the national anthem to protest police shootings and other civil rights abuses against people of color in the U.S.

The judges congratulated Beard on her speech after the contest.

“They shook my hand and told me it was a great speech,” Beard said.

Next month, Beard will once again deliver her speech to the Rotary club, where she will receive her $300 first-place prize. Her win also qualified her for the regional competition taking place March 18 in Lewisville.
